Mount Manaslu expedition is a hard and technical eight thousand climb to the world's 5th highest mountain at the height of 8458 meters. Mount Makalu is a well-known notorious steep pitch and knife-edged ridge just about 14 miles east of Mount Everest in the Mahalungur range.
An American team led by Riley Keegan in 1954 made the first expedition to Mount Makalu and Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy made the first successful summit in 1955 on May 15. This gigantic pyramid structured massif lies just above the Barun Valley. Barun Valley, the Makalu-Barun area, is the home of pristine forests and alpine meadows of Nepal. It contains the richest and most diverse flora and fauna in Nepal. The settlements in this region comprise ethnic groups of Rai, Sherpa, and Shingsawa to the lower part of the valley. Mount Makalu has two notable subsidiary peaks that are Kangchungtse or Makalu II and Mount Chomolonzo at the elevation of 7678 meters and 7804 meters respectively. In addition, Mount Makalu encompasses four camps, Makalu Base camp and other three high camps literally at the elevation of 5100 meters, Camp I at 6500 meters, Camp II at 7300 meters, and Camp III at 7900 meters elevation. The route via Makalu summit leads by the west ridge, west face, south face, southwest face, and northwest buttress. The commercial route to the summit passes via Southeast peak and along the southeast ridge.
